SWF Activities
Silver Wings Fraternity does
not campaign to affect aviation issues; however, the Fraternity does seek
to stimulate all aspects of aviation. It has recently concluded a two-year
program placing sets of 10 aviation-related books in 150 small town public
libraries. It provides aviation scholarships to worthy boys and girls, and
encourages organized youth challenge programs.
To honor the
accomplishments of long-time SWF member Captain Elrey B. Jeppesen, Silver
Wings was successful in having the terminal building at the new Denver
International Airport named the Jeppesen Terminal. The fraternity also
sponsored the creation of an extensive Jeppesen Exhibit at the Museum of
Flight on Boeing Field in Seattle and arranged for that museum to receive
Captain Jepp’s collection of professional memorabilia.
As a salute to intrepid early airmail
pilots and to publicize their accomplishments, Silver Wings has staged
commemorative flights of the Air Mail Service along all the segments of a
coast-to-coast route. Approximately 25 SWF members fly their own airplanes
on connecting segments westbound; 25 more fly on segments eastbound, many
carrying specially stamped letters and messages of greeting between city
postmasters.
SWF seeks to find
other ways to recognize the aviation accomplishments of current members
and those flyers who have gone before us. |
